How to Select the Right Canvas Head (Wig Blocks) for Wigmaking

Canvas heads also known as wig blocks come in various sizes from small to large and the best way to find out what size canvas head you should select is by measuring the circumference of your own head.  If your circumference falls in-between two sizes, then it is best to pick the next larger size.  The smallest size canvas head is 19 and the largest size is 25.

The reason why you do not want to go smaller is because you won't have any room for padding the canvas head.  Padding the canvas comes after you have made a template of your head using saran wrap and tape.  Once you've made your template and you are ready to pin the template to the canvas head, you must stuff the canvas with cotton to fill out your template before you pin the template down to the canvas.

I know this might sound confusing but I will demonstrate how this is done in another post.  In the meantime, remember the key points mentioned about buying your canvas head that I mentioned above. You also might want to have various sizes of canvas heads on hand if you are planning on making wigs for others.  You don't want to use your canvas head once it's stuffed, so it's best to keep yours separate and modify a separate one for customers.

Canvas Heads usually cost anywhere from $39 to $69. You can order this exact one on Amazon in different sizes for $39.
